IN MEMORY OF JAMES JEFFREY PLEWMAN aka NASH THE SLASH

James Jeffrey Plewman, aka NASH THE SLASH, was an iconic Canadian electronic musician best known for his experimental violin and mandolin compositions. Declared the godfather of electronic and industrial music in Canada by his peers, Nash pushed the envelope of his art using technology in his recordings and live performances in groundbreaking ways.

In the early 80s, Nash gained success touring with the likes of Gary Numan and signing to Virgin Records’ indie label Dindisc in the UK.  He developed a strong fan base across Europe, The United States and Canada. The remainder of his career stayed primarily under the radar, appealing to a loyal niche group of fans. His enigmatic persona, a white tuxedo and his face wrapped in bandages, was reminiscent of the Invisible Man. While it may have put him into the realm of outsider artist, his novel alter ego and stage aesthetics were also sophisticated and timeless, influenced by classic horror and German Expressionist filmmaking.

Nash passed away suddenly at the age of 66 in 2014, leaving us with his incredible story and an extensive musical legacy. He was a fiercely independent musician for most of his career and fought for artists’ rights. In his farewell letter to fans upon his retirement he wrote:

‘Creativity in all its facets should be inspirational, and as such should be absorbed, its  subtleties appreciated, understood and then woven into the fabric of some other person’s  creative vision... I hope I’ve left a few breadcrumbs in the forest to inspire others to find their own path.’

The Estate of Nash the Slash is proud to partner and donate a portion of the proceeds from various initiatives to MusiCounts to help inspire a new generation of musicians.
